Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure in which
sperm are place directly into the uterine cavity through a
catheter near the time of ovulation. This procedure is
performed in our clinic on properly selected patients
identified by the Advanced Semen Analysis as candidates most
likely to benefit from IUI. It may also be used to overcome
ejaculation problems such as impotence, premature
ejaculation or other medical conditions. IUI increases the
chances of pregnancy because the sperm are placed directly
into the uterus, bypassing the cervix and improving the
delivery of the sperm to the egg. IUI’s can be performed either with your partner’s sperm or
with donor sperm. It is recommended that you abstain from
sexual intercourse for two to three days before the
procedure. He will provide a semen sample one to two hours
before the procedure is to be performed. The semen undergoes
a separation technique that identifies the best sperm in the
sample. Once the sperm is prepared, it is inseminated into
your uterus, which only takes a few minutes and causes
little, if any, discomfort. The sperm is injected using a
small catheter and once you have rested in our office for 30
minutes, you may resume normal activity.
